What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is a very serious and can be a life threatening condition. Hoarding is a compunction to not throw anything away. When trying to throw something away the person hoarding will be in distress.

Symptoms of Hoarding Include:

  • Persistent inability to part with any possession

  • Excessive attachment to possessions

  • Cluttered living spaces

  • Keeping stacks of newspapers, magazines or junk mail

  • Letting food or trash build up to unsanitary levels

  • Acquiring unneeded or seemingly useless items

  • Difficulty managing daily activities because of procrastination and trouble making decisions

  • Moving items from one pile to another without throwing anything away

  • Difficulty organizing items

  • Shame or embarrassment

  • Limited or no social interactions
