After a House Fire

After experiencing a house fire you may feel devastated and unsure of what to do. This is completely normal as this is a very overwhelming and stressful situation.  We want to help make things as easy as possible for you. Here are five steps to take after a house fire to get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

1. Call Your Insurance Agent

You will need to contact your insurance agent immediately to start the claims process. You may get calls from public adjuster or contractors but it is never a good idea to speak to anyone else regarding your loss besides your agent. Your agent will walk you through the steps you need to take and can also recommend a restoration company to start the putback process if necessary.

2. Find Somewhere Safe You Can live Temporarily

Most likely, you won’t be able to stay in your home after a fire. Finding somewhere to go right away is important. If you’re not able to stay with family or friends, you will want to find out if your insurance will cover a hotel or an alternative place of residence. If neither of those is an option, you can contact a local agency such as the Red Cross, or Salvation Army who can help you find somewhere safe to stay.  Also, be sure to ask your insurance adjuster if your policy covers some or all of the cost of your temporary living arrangements.

3.  Find a Restoration Company

If your agent does not recommend a company then you will need to find one on your own. Look for a reputable company that is licensed and insured. Timing is also important so you will want someone who can respond quickly to your loss. If you're not sure what to do follow these helpful tips on how to choose the best restoration company

4.  Separate Damaged items from Undamaged Items

Your insurance company will need an inventory list of damaged items. Separating your damaged property from your undamaged property will make it easier for you to create this. If you have saved receipts of any items submit those as well to prove the value. Photos of any damaged items are always helpful if you not have receipts. This is where having a home inventory list will come in super handy. It is always a good idea to review your insurance policy before disaster strikes. That way you will know ahead of time that will be taken care of.
