Holiday Home Security Tips

The holidays are here and ’tis the season for celebrating with family and friends. Millions of Americans will be traveling and unfortunately, this is a prime time of the year for home burglaries. By taking a few precautions you can ensure that your home is fully protected.

1. Secure Your Packages

Make sure that you have packages delivered to a secure location if you are not going to be home. If you are at work the majority of your day then have them delivered to your office. If they are sent to your home and you are not there then have a neighbor grab them for you. You don’t want to leave packages sitting on your front porch where they can easily be stolen. You may also want to consider investing in a video doorbell or installing a camera on your front door.

 2. Be Mindful of Your Social Media

Do not post your holiday plans on social media, especially if you will be out of town. Be sure not to check into your location and do not post how long you will be away on vacation. Social media makes it way too easy for thieves to know when your home is empty. You can still post your festivities, but it’s best to wait until you are home to do so.

3. Don’t Leave Presents Under the Tree

Putting wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree looks pretty, but if your tree is near a window then this can be a magnet for break-ins. Try to keep your Christmas tree away from windows or other places that can be seen if you love having presents under it. Your best bet is to wait to put your gifts out until Christmas Eve. It is just too easy for someone to break a window and take your gifts otherwise.

4. Communicate With Your Neighbors

If you going out of town let your neighbors know so they can keep an eye on your house and report any suspicious activity. Ask them to pick up your newspaper and mail so that it does not appear that you are gone. Also, make your home look as if you are there with timed lights and motion sensors.

5. Check Your Locks

Make sure that your door and window locks are secure and working well. Before you go out of town inspect all of them to make sure they are locked. Don’t leave a spare key outside under your mat or in a flowerpot, etc. It’s too easy to be found.  If you need to have a spare key in case you are locked out give it to a trusted neighbor.
