Is Your Home Ready for Cold Weather?

Prepare your Home for Winter

Now that the cold air is settling in, it is time to start preparing your home for those dropping temperatures. Just taking care of a few things around your house now will save you from trouble later!

Here are the top tips to prepare your home for winter:

1. Examine Roof and Clean Rain Gutters
As we talked about previously in our blog, it is super important to clean your rain gutters and roofs. Remove leaves and debris to prevent clogging. Clogged gutters can create ice dams in cold weather which will prevent your system from draining.

2. Check heating system/Change filters
Get your heating system serviced, make sure it is working efficiently. Be sure that your heat vents are not covered by anything such as furniture or other items. Change filters for optimal heating.

3. Prepare your fireplace
Have a professional inspect your wood-burning fireplace, also be sure it is clean. Make sure your damper is closed tight to prevent any drafts from coming in.

4. Check windows and doors for drafts
Inspect these areas for any cracks or openings that can expose your home to cold air. These openings will make your heating system work harder and end up costing you more money. You can easily seal cracks with caulk. Buy weather stripping and install it around doorways or windows.

5. Make sure your water heater is ready
You can prepare your water heater for cold weather by draining it and cleaning out any debris or sediment that has gotten in your tank. Make sure to turn off the water heater before draining it. Water heater manufacturers recommend that you do this once a year to make your water heater last longer.

Take these preventative measures to protect your home during the winter season. Now is a great time to go through your house and inspect areas that need attention. Keep your home your happy place, you will most likely be spending more time indoors the next few months.
