The New Coronavirus

COVID-19, or “coronavirus disease 2019,” should be taken seriously. Since it was first identified in December of 2019, it has spread globally, causing governments to close borders, quarantine hundreds of millions, and shut economies down. Over 7,000 deaths worldwide have been confirmed, and the crisis is likely to continue for many weeks and months. Older adults and adults with vulnerable immune systems are most susceptible to serious illness from COVID-19.

How does the coronavirus spread?

COVID-19 is spread through person-to-person contact and likely through contact with infected surfaces.

Person-to-person infection can occur from breathing in respiratory droplets from infected persons. Direct touch isn’t necessary to spread the infection. “Social distancing,” or maintaining six feet of distance from others, will limit this person-to-person spread.

Infection can also occur by touching an infected surface and then touching your own face, nose, or eyes. During this time avoid touching your face for this reason.

How long could the coronavirus live on surfaces?

A recent study found that COVID-19 can survive on surfaces: 4 hours on copper, 24 hours on cardboard, 48-72 hours on plastic and stainless steel. Disinfect and clean surfaces frequently to limit the chance of spread.
