Summer Tips – Preventing Home Disasters

Residential home

When you hear the term ‘summer safety’ you likely think of things like drinking enough water, not leaving pets alone in cars, wearing your helmet when riding a bike, and applying sunblock before outdoor activities. While these are all great tips, what about summer safety for your home? We have a few tips to keep your home safe from disasters this summer and ways ServiceMaster by Rice can help if you do find yourself in one of these situations.

Avoiding Mold, Fires, and Floods This Summer

Keep your home safe from mold. Mold is a fungi and can grow on any substance with excessive moisture. Summertime can be prime time for mold growth due to the combination of moisture and heat. You may notice mold in your home after you experienced flooding, leaky pipes, bad air flow, or plumbing problems.

This summer, make sure that you are preventing mold by paying attention to your home after you experience any of the events above. Be sure to monitor indoor air humidity, dry wet areas immediately after you notice them, clean drip pans regularly, and double check that your exhaust fans are vented to the outdoors and are not blocked. If you do find mold in your home, call ServiceMaster by Rice. We are IICRC certified technicians who can help you remove all mold from your home.

Keep your home safe from fires. Did you know that most house fires are caused in the kitchen? Cooking equipment is the leading cause of fires year after year. We recently created a fire safety checklist so you can keep your home as safe from fires as possible. Topics include electrical and appliance, cooking, smoke alarms, a home escape plan, and candle safety. Following our safety checklist will lessen the likelihood of a fire occurring in your home.

We understand that experiencing a fire can be overwhelming, and the first priority is the safety of you and your family and calling 911. Once things have settled a bit, reach out to our team here at ServiceMaster by Rice. We offer fire restoration services including assessing the damage, restoration, and deodorizing.

Keep your home safe from flooding. According to floodsmart.gov, floods are the number one natural disaster in the United States. It’s important to take proper precautions to try to prevent flooding in your home. One way to do this is to make sure that your foundation is graded so rainwater doesn’t flow towards your house. You should also install extra protection on your roof with a waterproof barrier, keep your gutters clean, and make sure that you have a battery-powered sump pump on hand.

What happens if you do experience flooding in your home? Call ServiceMaster by Rice. We will begin by identifying the source of the problem, evaluate your carpeting, evaluate your flooring, evaluate the walls, ceiling, and cabinets, then move to structural drying. Our team of experienced professionals work quickly and efficiently to help you recover from flooding.
