Des Moines Flooding: ServiceMaster By Rice Responds

On June 30th, Des Moines, Iowa received some intense flash flooding that surged throughout downtown and many of the surrounding suburbs. Some of the surrounding suburbs, such as Ankeny and Urbandale, accumulated 7-10 inches of rainfall in a matter of hours, causing rivers and creeks to overflow throughout Central Iowa. This unfortunate natural disaster caused many homes and businesses to experience flooding within their walls. As the flooding occurred, we knew that we were going to have a lot of work on our hands for the next couple of weeks to come. Ever since that day, we have been working around the clock to help our fellow Iowans.

How The Flooding Started

June 30th was a rather blissful day throughout the state of Iowa, for the most. The majority of the day was in the low 90s with clear skies up until sunset. However, things took a twist for the worse after the sun went down. With water levels already relatively high from previous weeks of rain, a massive storm cell from the west rolled into Iowa with force and tons of rain. Homes and businesses all felt the force as sewer drains and runoff fields could not keep up with the excessive amount of water coming down.

As our owner, Austin Rice recalls, “I first started to realize how bad it was going to be when I saw all the stalled cars in the streets and I had to backtrack to find an alternative route our office in Clive that night. I knew we were going to need help from our ServiceMaster network. I immediately started calling our ServiceMaster Partners from neighboring states.”

Flood Cleanup Help From Other States

When we fielded nearly 1,400 calls in the first 18 hours after the flooding, we knew we would need some help. Thankfully, ServiceMaster Partners are always there for each other in a time of need. ServiceMaster By Rice was able to receive help from ServiceMaster partners from the following states and cities:

  • Denver
  • Chicago
  • Omaha
  • Oklahoma City
  • Kansas City
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota

Since the night of the flooding, we have had crews working endlessly around the clock to help with flood cleanup and water damage repair all throughout Central Iowa. We have helped with hundreds of homes and have done flood restoration services for over 50 separate commercial businesses in the Des Moines area.
