Prevent Water Damage While on Vacation

The end of a vacation can be a letdown but coming home to find your house flooded is even worse. No matter the time of year, water damage is a possibility. Be it frozen pipe bursts during the Winter holidays or rising floodwaters during Spring break. Give yourself peace of mind while you're away from home for an extended period of time. Explore ways to prevent water damage with these expert suggestions.

Water Damage Prevention Tips:

  • Turn off the main water supply. If a pipe springs a leak, there will be little to no water available to cause damage. You can also turn off the water at each appliance or fixture. For example, the washing machine, refrigerator, or toilet.
  • Inspect the hoses to these appliances as well. Most refrigerator water lines are made from thin plastic that can easily leak (and go undetected for a long time!). Replace any worn or cracked hoses.
  • Recruit a friend or neighbor to check on the home. Let them know where the main water shut-off valve is in the event that they need it.
  • Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees in the winter to prevent frozen pipe bursts
  • Remove any yard debris and lawn furniture that could cause damage if a storm rolls through. Clean your gutters and storm drains to avoid water backing up near the foundation and into the basement.
  • Inspect the water heater for leaks or signs of corrosion. You can also turn the heater to vacation mode to save energy.
