3 Steps to Prevent Fire Damage in the Workplace

Fire damage in your business can be devastating with downtime, loss of revenue, and possible loss of life. On average 3340 workplace fires occur per year. At ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning we have restored thousands of businesses over our 24 years in the restoration industry. The most common cause of office fire damage is cooking-related followed by electrical.  Read on for tips to keep your employees safe from fires.

Have a Plan

  • OSHA may require that you have a plan in place, and check your local ordinances. Determine where your employees should meet outside the building in the event of a fire evacuation. Determine escape routes and make sure your exits are clearly marked. Have emergency contacts handy such as local officials, management staff, and ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning.
  • Consider a pre-loss plan with ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning. Talk to us about becoming a Priority Response Partner. We will create a 3D map out your building with safety labels.
  • Back up your important documents and files in the cloud or off-site.

Install Safety Equipment

  • Install smoke detectors and have them tested regularly. Most municipalities require fire sprinklers in commercial buildings. Check your local ordinances to make sure you are in compliance ( but they are a good idea even if they're not required by law).
  • Stage fire extinguishers in areas likely for a fire, within 75 feet of all employee's common areas. Type A fire extinguishers are most commonly found in office spaces. Make sure they are easily accessible and labeled.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks to keep them up to date.

Train Your Employees

  • Maintain your material and safety data sheets as required by law.
  • Make all employees aware of designated smoking areas and provide a proper receptacle to extinguish smoking materials.
  • Keep kitchen and electrical areas clean from dust and debris buildup.
  • Maintain your electrical equipment by regularly checking for worn or frayed wires.

We hope these tips will help prevent fire damage in your business, But if the unthinkable does happen, we can help. Be prepared and keep ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning on standby 800-865-5157.
