Wintertime Fire Hazards

Fires are not only a danger during the holidays - as temperatures drop, the dangers rise. Although many are familiar with the following tips, recent news stories have turned the spotlight on the catastrophic loss caused by a fire. Therefore, key reminders could not come at a better time. So whether it is portable heaters or generators, electrical distribution or winter storms, we want to share a list of tips to stay safe at home.

Quick Mindful Tips:

  • Maintain a 3-foot distance between a heat source and anything that might burn
  • Keep portable generators outside and at a distance from the home
  • Monitor and test smoke detectors regularly and carbon monoxide alarms monthly
  • Plug only one heating device into an outlet at a time
  • Inspect and clean chimneys and/or vents on an annual basis

The National Association of State Fire Marshalls (NASFM) reports a greater number of fires in the wintertime, don’t wait until it is too late. For more tips and other helpful resources, contact any ServiceMaster of Cherry Hill team member.
