About Elgin, IL
Affectionately referred to as the city in the suburbs, Elgin is located just 35 miles north of Chicago along the Fox River. Named after the Scottish tune “Elgin,” our city was established in 1835, and soon became well known for its butter and dairy goods sold in Chicago until the Elgin Watch Company was founded here in 1864. To this day, the clocks at Union Station in Chicago bear the Elgin name. Today, our 114,797 residents enjoy outdoor recreation activities, using the Fox River Trail, the Kane County Forest Preserve, and Lords Park Zoo.
