5 Winter Home Hacks to Keep You Warm

Cold weather means more energy and money being spent on heating your home. Besides running your heat all day and night there are other options to help keep your home warm. Here are five hacks that will keep your energy bill down and help you stay toasty.

1. Know How to Use Your Curtains

Make the most of a sunny day by opening all of your curtains and blinds. Let all the sunlight in that you can throughout the day. The sun will provide free, natural warmth to your home. When it becomes dark, close your curtains to keep warmth inside. You can use heavy curtains as better protection to trap heat inside at night.

2. Prevent Drafts

Draft-proof your home by sealing any cracks in your doors and window that could let cold air in from outside. You can do this for very little cost. You can purchase self-adhesive rubber seals to place around doors and windows, or simply caulk any cracks that you visually see. There are also plenty of DIY ideas you can check out that are fairly simple.

3.  Use Rugs on Hardwood Floors

If your home has a lot of hardwood floors it’s a great idea to purchase some large area rugs. Rugs will help heat from escaping out of your floorboards and keep your feet warm!

4. Close Any Unused Rooms

The bigger your home is, the more it will cost it is to heat. If you have an empty guest or storage room, keep the door closed for the majority of the time. You don’t want to waste money heating a room you don’t use and this will keep the other rooms warmer.

5. Add More Insulation

If your home is older you should check your insulation. You may want to add more insulation to your attic or walls. It may be a little on the expensive side to do so but it will be worth the investment in the long run.
