Christmas Light Safety

Christmas lights are one of the prettiest sights during the holiday.  Seeing all the decorated homes will surely put you in the holiday spirit. Unfortunately, like all things involving electricity, Christmas lights have some safety hazards if not handled in the correct way. We want to make sure your holiday stays bright and safe. By following our simple safety tips, you can make sure it will.

Safety Tips

  1. When using old lights, be sure to inspect them all before plugging them in or stringing them. Look for any missing bulbs or frayed wires. If the wires are damaged in any way, discard them and purchase new lights. If there are missing bulbs, replace them.

  2. Make sure the lights that you are using outside are made for outdoor usage. It will say on the original box. Do the same for the extension cords that you are using. They should be approved for outdoors.

  3. Do not run extension cords out of doors or windows, or in high traffic areas. Extension cords are one of the number one causes of electrical fires.

  4. Don’t plug too many cords into one circuit, you run the risk of overloading it.

  5. Do not attach lights to your home with staples or nails, buy the plastic light hangers to avoid a fire hazard.
