Protect Your Bathroom From Water Damage

Protect Your Bathroom From Water Damage

Bathrooms use a lot of water and there is a good chance that at some point water will get into walls and floors. Bathrooms are also a number one culprit when it comes to home water disasters. Follow our tips to prevent water from causing mold or damage to your bathroom that can lead to costly repairs.

Repair Cracked Tiles

Look for broken or missing tiles in your bathroom, these can allow water to get under your floors and can cause damage. Also, check your grout in showers, tubs, and sinks and fix with caulk if you find cracks.

Check for Signs of Leaks

Signs of leaks can range from discoloration on walls or floors, musty odors, stains on ceilings, or warped drywall. Check walls if any areas are softer than others. You can also look under vanities and ensure there are no leaks from the sink trap. If you see any of these issues you need to find the source and have it repaired.

Watch What You Flush

Never flush any items down your toilet besides toilet paper such as Kleenex, paper towels, or sanitary napkins. Flushing anything else can cause plumbing issues which can cause a toilet to overflow.

Use Exhaust Fan

Use your bathroom fan every time you take a shower or bath. Your fan can help pull any excess moisture out of the air and prevent it from entering your walls. If you want to be extra cautious you can also use a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity.

Keep an Eye on Sinks

If you sinks tend to hold water or drain slowly they may be clogged. Do not let sinks collect waterTry at-home methods to unclog your sink first and if that doesn’t work you should call a plumber.
