The Dangers of Flood Water

The Dangers of Flood Water

The recent hurricanes have left millions of Americans affected by flood waters. Floods are one of the most dangerous natural disasters there are.  You may not think you will ever face flood water, but it happens way more than you think. That is why we want you to be aware of the risks and health hazards that a flood can bring so that you can remain safe.

Risks that Flood Waters Bring

Rain Drops on Cement

1.Strong, deep standing water

Flood water is usually stronger and deeper than it may seem. Walking or driving in flood waters is a bad idea. Strong currents can sweep you away within minutes. There can also be dangerous debris in the water that can cause injury so the best thing to do is stay away.

2. Contamination

Flood water can be contaminated with infectious diseases, bacteria, sewage, dead animals and more. For these reasons you don’t want to go near it and especially do not drink it. Kids may think it is fun to play in flood water but you should never allow this. The risks far outweigh the fun and can make you very ill.

3. Electric Shock

Power lines that have been damaged from a storm have the potential to deliver some serious electrical currents through flood water. This can especially be a risk if you have flooding in your basement. Do not attempt to go in your basement if water is anywhere near electrical outlets or appliances.
