Winter Proof Your Home

Winter Proof Your Home

Winter weather and storms are here. It is important to be sure your home can withstand freezing temperatures. Do you know if your home is ready to face harsh winter weather? Don’t worry, if your not sure, you still have time. Here are a few things you can do to help your home during the colder months.

Check Your Windows and Doors

Cold air can easily come through windows and doors that are not sealed properly. First, check for any gaps along window frames and doors and caulk them right away. Next, check the sealing around these areas and redo it if needed. Taking care of drafts will cut down on heating costs. As far as your blinds or shades, when it’s sunny, keep them open to warm the room but when it is not, keep them shut.

Add Insulation

Insulation

Check the insulation in your attic. Heat rises so you want to be sure your attic has plenty of insulation. Adding more insulation where it is needed can cut down on your energy costs and keep your house warm and cozy. If you are not sure if you have enough, consult a professional.

Protect Plumbing

Consider wrapping pipes in foam and heat tape to protect them from freezing. The last thing you want is a frozen pipe that bursts during the winter. Check for any leaks in your pipes and if you find any areas that are cracker damaged, seal them with foam. On nights when the temperature drops significantly, leave your water on a slow drip to prevent freezing.

Be Smart When Heating Your Home

If you rely on your fireplace alot during the winter, be sure it is properly cleaned and inspected before you use it. The same goes for your HVAC system, you should have it tuned and checked at least once a year. One way you can avoid outrageous costs from heating your home is by purchasing a programmable thermostat. This allows you to turn the heat down when you are gone and then back up in plenty of time before you get home.

Follow these tips to stay warm and protect your home this winter.
