What should be on your Tornado Emergency Checklist?

According to our Spring Outlook, there is a potential for 1,200+ tornadoes this tornado season. Tornadoes can form quickly and can be unpredictable. When a severe storm occurs, you may not have much time to prepare your family for a potential disaster. Having a family emergency plan will help keep your family on track and safe during any sort of emergency. ServiceMaster DSI will outline what to do to prepare for a tornado to touchdown near your home and provide a checklist for emergency kits for your family.

  • Identify the safest space in your home.

    • If you have a storm cellar or basement, proceed there when a tornado warning has occurred. If not, it should be an interior room with no windows.

  • Reinforce your home.

    • Ensuring that your home’s foundation is strong will help reinforce your home. Also, investing in storm doors and storm windows will add an additional layer of protection.

  • Monitor storm updates.

    • Downloading a weather app with notifications for your area or investing in a weather radio will allow you to stay up to date on the most recent watches and warnings.

  • Gather supplies and emergency kit

    • Have an emergency kit ready with essentials you will need during the storm and for the potential aftermath of the storm.

Being prepared for potential disasters will help you stay calm in a time of chaos, but what should you pack in the emergency kit? You will need to pack safety equipment, food and water sources, and much more.

Your emergency kit should be compact, durable, and easy to carry. This will make it easier to transport should you be displaced from your home. The kit should contain enough supplies to last you at least three days in case of displacement from your home. Below is a list of recommendations of items that should be in your emergency kit.

  • First Aid Kit

  • Medications

  • Cell Phones

  • Flashlights

  • Copy of Insurance Cards

  • Water

  • Canned Goods

  • Change of clothes

  • Toilet Paper

  • Personal Protective Equipment (masks, face shields, etc.)

These are just the basics of an emergency kit. You should also consider putting important paperwork into a waterproof container to avoid damage. Learn more about emergency kits at
