After the Disaster: How to Find a Contractor You Can Trust

When disaster strikes and home repairs are necessary, it’s hard to know where to turn. After a tornado, flood or other disaster, it’s not uncommon to see door-to-door contractors inundate a neighborhood, promising the best deals under the sun.

Unfortunately, the “discounts” you receive from these contractors often show up elsewhere — whether padded into your invoice to the insurance company or in the lack of quality of the job. Either way, this actually costs you in the long run.

So what can you do to ensure you’re working with a trusted damage restoration contractor?

Many insurance professionals recommend obtaining a Certificate of Insurance from a contractor before signing a contract and advise insureds to never – EVER – choose a contractor who insists on a large cash payment before the work even begins. A business card stating that a company is “licensed and insured” is not necessarily proof that it really is.

Get written estimates from potential contractors so you know what to expect. In addition, get recommendations from people you trust and plan ahead for disasters. Ask your insurance agent for a list of reputable companies and keep important phone numbers on hand. You never know when you may need them.
