Do You Know the Signs of Water Damage?

Water damage can originate from many sources and manifest in various ways. It can infiltrate ceilings, floors, and walls, each with distinct signs of damage, causing wood damage, structural issues, mold, and other health effects, becoming a financial headache. Whether you have water damage from a hurricane, thunderstorm, frozen or burst pipes, or a leaking appliance, be on the lookout for these signs of water damage:

When trying to detect water damage in your ceiling, look for these signs:

  • Paint that has started to peel, bubble, or flake

  • Small hairline cracks. If larger, these cracks can look similar to a spiderweb.

  • Water rings, usually a tan color.

  • Mold growth, especially in corners where walls and ceilings meet. Most commonly in humid rooms or basements.

  • Bowed or sagging ceilings.

  • Water stains that are usually yellow but can also look similar to rust.

  • Musty odors.

When it comes to water damage on your walls, look for the following signs:

  • Softened drywall. If the wall sinks inward or becomes depressed in some way, you likely have water damage on the inside, even if the exterior appears normal.

  • Discoloration often appearing in the form of streaks.

  • Water rings also in a tan color.

  • Cracked, bubbling, or flaking paint.

  • Musty odors.

When it comes to water damage on your floors, look for the following (remember that hardwood flooring is especially susceptible to water damage):

  • Buckling: where the floor may separate from the seams and peel upward.

  • Warping: flooring that may be cracked or bubbling.

  • Cupping: where plank edges curl upward, leaving the middle slightly depressed.

  • Crowning: a loss of moisture within the floor leaves the middle raised up and the edges lowered, with planks rounded.

  • Discoloration of the floor.

  • Musty odors and smells.

Hidden water damage can be especially dangerous, so it’s essential to look for the following common signs if you suspect you have water damage but can’t see it:

  • Mold growth.

  • A sudden increase in your water utility bill.

  • Stains or other discoloration.

  • Musty odors and smells.

  • Warped, buckled, or misshapen walls, ceilings, and/or floors.

  • Peeling paint or wallpaper.
