Winter 2023: Frozen Pipe Break Water Damage

Frigid temperatures trigger frozen pipe breaks in Massachusetts and Rhode Island

The first weekend in February brought record-breaking low temperatures to the Massachusetts and Rhode Island area. On Saturday morning, temperatures reached as low as -8 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -30 degrees. With temperatures of this severe, frozen pipes are common. When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on your plumbing and causing the pipe to burst. Water from the broken pipe floods the building, causing water damage. ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning responded to local properties to help restore the water damage from frozen pipe bursts. We are always available 24/7/365 for disaster restoration emergencies and this weekend was no different. Our crews responded to emergency after-hours calls throughout the weekend.

ServiceMaster Dynamic Cleaning is part of a national network. We brought in additional resources from our fellow ServiceMaster teammates from other parts of the country, allowing us to service more customers. Affected businesses included public schools, government municipalities, office buildings, churches, and retail buildings.

One notable project we helped to restore was a Pawtucket, RI elementary school. This job required urgency to complete the restoration process to get the children back in class as soon as possible.

A frozen pipe in the heating unit on the third floor burst, flooding the two floors below. Ten to fifteen classrooms as well as hallways, stairwells, and bathrooms were affected. The newly constructed school just opened in the fall of 2022 and the school administrators were concerned about preserving the newly installed technology and investments. Swift action is extremely important with water damage loss to prevent secondary damage and mold growth. We quickly responded to assess the damage, extract standing water, and set up our professional drying equipment throughout the property. Fallen ceiling tile debris was cleaned up and unsalvageable building materials like drywall and insulation were removed and disposed of. Meetings with the electrical inspector and the building inspectors were coordinated immediately to make sure that all pertinent information was discussed and appropriate procedures were followed. Daily safety meetings were held to make sure that everyone on-site was aware of protocols and correct procedures.
