Free Emergency Kits & Power Stations in Salem: A Lifeline for Vulnerable Residents

As wildfire season and extreme summer temperatures return to Oregon, ServiceMaster of Salem is helping spread the word about a vital resource now available to the community’s most vulnerable residents. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) is distributing free emergency kits and portable power stations to eligible older adults and individuals with disabilities.

This initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, is designed to increase safety and preparedness for those who may be most affected during natural disasters such as wildfires, heat waves, floods, or power outages.

The emergency kits, which come in easy-to-carry backpacks, include essential supplies like first aid items, flashlights, emergency food and water, and other basic necessities. For individuals who rely on powered medical devices or mobility aids, the portable power stations provide a critical backup during extended outages.

More than 20,000 kits and thousands of power sources have already been distributed statewide. Now, ODHS is working to reach more residents in the Salem area through its Office of Aging and People with Disabilities.

To qualify, individuals must be older adults or have a disability, and be receiving in-home support through Medicaid. Eligible residents can receive both a kit and a portable power station.

Anyone interested in receiving a kit should contact their case manager or reach out to their local ODHS Office of Aging and People with Disabilities. For those who are unsure who to contact, ODHS recommends calling the local office or visiting their website for guidance.

At ServiceMaster of Salem, we understand how emergencies can disrupt lives - especially for those without the resources to recover quickly. If you know someone who may qualify for this free emergency support, please encourage them to apply. Every kit handed out is a step toward a more prepared and protected Salem.
