About Salem, OR
The capital of Oregon, Salem was founded in 1842 in the center of the Willamette Valley. The second-largest city in the state behind Portland, our city had a population of 174,365 in 2019. The Oregon State Fair has been held here since 1861, and Salem earned the nickname “Cherry City” due to the historical significance of the local cherry-growing industry.
An annual cherry festival was held from 1903 until after World War I, and included the election of a cherry queen. On clear days, residents and visitors can view distant mountains such as Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams.
