HOW TO PREVENT A WET CARPET FROM MOLDING

The carpeting in your might be aesthetically pleasing and feel soft on your feet until it experiences water damage.  Whether you spill liquid on your carpet or a flood comes through your home, you need to treat your carpet immediately.  The last thing you want is for mold to form leading to costly service repairs.  Luckily, there a few simples ways to prevent your wet carpeting from molding.

Soak Up Water Quickly

When your carpet suffers from excess water exposure, it is critical that you soak it up as quickly as possible.  There are a variety of ways to do so including laying towels on all of the wet sections of the carpet,  Pressing down on the towels with your hands is a simple way to soak up the excess water.  You should then use a wet/dry vacuum to remove all of the water from your carpet.  It is critical to know that the padding in your carpet soaks up water like a sponge, so you should lift up your carpeting and replace the wet padding immediately.

Plug In Fans

It is vital that you invest in large high-power fans because they are the most effective at drying wet carpeting.  You should place them on the dry areas of the carpet in the direction of the wet sections.  You should then plug in and turn on a dehumidifier to remove the excess moisture from your carpeting.  Keep these items running for at least 24 hours straight because they will reduce the chances of mold and they will circulate fresh-air.

Clean and Sanitize

If storm water affected the carpeting in your home, you need clean all of the areas immediately.  Clean all of the wall and hard surfaces with soap and water to reduce your chances of mold spore from forming.  Sanitize all of these surfaces with a mixture of chlorine bleach and water making sure to wear rubber gloves.  Make sure to remove and clean all of your furniture items that were affected by water.
