When Is Mold Remediation Required?

In 2003, the Illinois General Assembly enacted the House Joint Resolution 12. This established a Joint Task Force on Mold in Indoor Environments, which examined mold problems throughout the state. The task force made recommendations to the General Assembly about how to regulate mold indoors. Then, in 2007, the Mold Remediation Registration Act was passed. This law requires that the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) must report any federal research and regulations related to mold cleanup to the General Assembly every year.

The guidelines regarding mold remediation are based on the area affected. If the affected area is less than 30 square feet, then the owner may choose to clean it up. Be aware that mold can have adverse health effects and may have severe reactions in those with respiratory problems. If the affected area is more than 30 square feet, then a professional mold remediator should be called in to ensure that the affected areas are isolated, cleaned, and dried and that your HVAC system is also free of mold spores
