Prevent Spring Water Damage

Even though winter is over, you may still experience storm damage. Spring showers are around the corner. ServiceMaster TEAM in the Fort Worth area compiled the following DIY inspection checklist to help keep your home water damage free this spring.

Exterior

Gutters:

The condition of your gutter system is a crucial component in keeping your home rainwater-free. Inspect your gutters for leaks or blockage and remove twigs, leaves, and mud. Existing debris can cause an overflow. It’s also important to direct your downspouts away from your foundation and into a storm drain. You can do this by attaching downspout extenders. Find these extenders at your local home improvement store.

Roof, Windows & Doors:

The three spots that are most susceptible to collecting rainwater outside of your home are your doors, windows, and roof. Inspect these areas for any existing damage. Close your windows and doors. If you see any gaps around their frames, seal them with weather stripping. Even a small opening can collect moisture and cause mold growth. When inspecting your roof, replace missing shingles and fill in any holes or other damage you find.

Sprinklers:

Spring is a great time to get your sprinkler system up and running. Start by removing coverings and reconnecting your outdoor water supply. Inspect the sprinkler heads and pipes for damage. Once worn pieces are replaced, run your sprinklers. Make sure your plants are getting watered without pools of water forming.

Interior

Entranceway:

You can’t quite stop worrying about tracked-in moisture. Make sure you have a dry mop on hand to wipe up water quickly. Mats and durable throw rugs can also help protect your floors from spring rainwater. Once you walk inside, place shoes and raincoats in a designated spot that will keep the rest of your home rain-free.

Attic & Basement:

When water damage occurs, chances are you’ll notice it in your attic or basement first. Check these areas on a regular basis. That way you’ll be able to act quickly. To inspect, walk around the perimeters of these areas. Look for water stains, soft spots, holes, and mold. Don’t forget to check the underside of your roof in your attic. This area is susceptible to ice damage in the winter months.

If you have a sump pump in your basement, test it to ensure it’s working correctly. Open the sump pit, remove debris and notice the water level. A low water level should indicate that your sump pump is working. Last but not least, pour 5 gallons of water into your sump pit. Observe to see your sump pump remove the water.

Bathroom & Laundry Room & Kitchen:

Low winter temperatures can affect your water pipes. Check the rooms in your home that are most likely to show this type of damage. Turn on sinks and shower faucets, flush toilets, and inspect all around the area for leaks or pooling water. Run your washing machine and dishwasher to ensure these appliances are running properly. Don’t miss hoses that could be restricted or causing slow but destructive leaks.
