DIFFERENT KINDS OF HOUSEHOLD MOLD

Finding mold in your home can be incredibly scary. We’ve all heard the stories of how even minor water damage can cause dangerous household mold, which can have negative side effects on the health of you and your family. If you notice household mold, your first reaction should be to call a professional like ServiceMaster of Baltimore. If you want to know more about the kinds of mold you’re dealing with in the meantime, here’s a handy guide to figuring out basic household molds.

Alternaria

This is a spore mold that can cause allergies. It’s mostly found in carpets, textiles, and house dust. Be sure to check your window frames and showers as well.

Aspergillus

This fungus can usually be found in warmer climates and areas of extreme water damage or moisture. They’re also commonly found in house dust. They produce mycotoxins that are associated with some kinds of disease, although aspergillus is somewhat common in most households.

Cladosporium

Typically an outdoor fungus, cladosporium can enter the home through air conditioning units or HVAC systems. It’s a trigger for hay fever and asthma symptoms, so it can be dangerous.

Penicillium

It may sound similar to penicillin, an antibiotic that has saved many lives, but penicillin is actually derived from penicillium, the fungus. It can cause allergies, hay fever, and asthma, and is usually found growing on wallpaper or in decaying fabrics in water-damaged homes.

Stachybotrys

One of the most dangerous household molds, stachybotrys is a toxic black mold that produces airborne toxins. It can cause a whole host of awful things, including breathing difficulties, memory and hearing loss, flu-like symptoms, dizziness, and even bleeding in the lungs. It’s a slimy, black mold, and is certainly a cause for concern. Thankfully, it’s the least common household mold.
